In Press Releases by DJC Admin

Kamas, Utah – March 26, 2019 – Ballet West II will grace the stage of DeJoria Center for one night of contemporary and classical ballet on April 6, 2019. Ballet West’s second company, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is composed of pre-professionals from around the globe, and has been critically lauded for their physicality and diverse repertoire.

“We are thrilled to host Ballet West II, as it has established a reputation of its own as an elite touring ensemble,” said Mike Storm, general manager for DeJoria Center. “Its world-renowned dancers are incredibly gifted, and what better setting than the scenic mountains of Kamas for them to perform in.”

Directed by Calvin Kitten, and Assistant Director, Peggy Dolkas, the duo has a knowledge of ballet and ballet training that is unparalleled in the industry. Kitten, a 19-year veteran of The Joffrey Ballet, has two Ruth Page Awards, and has been featured on the cover of Dance Magazine.  Both Kitten and Dolkas have been named by Dance Magazine in their coveted list, “25 Dancers to Watch.”

Ballet West II will perform a mixed bill of time-honored classical routines and bold new works that will showcase the troupes impressive and diverse talents. The repertoire includes:

Divertimento

Choreography: Elena Kunikova | Music: Mikhail Glinka
After graduating from Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, Elena Kunikova danced more than 30 principal and soloist roles including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, and many others before switching to teaching, coaching, and choreographing. The classical ballet Divertimento takes its name from a musical term that means a work that entertains and amuses.

Laden

Choreography: Emily Adams | Music: Franz Schubert
First performed at the Utah Arts Festival in 2017, Laden is a contemporary work created for six dancers by Ballet West Principal Artist Emily Adams. It is choreographed to Schubert’s Piano Trio no. 2 in E flat major, Op. 100, one of the last compositions the composer produced in his life.

Don Quixote Pas de Deux

Choreography: after Marius Petipa | Music: Ludwig Minkus
Almost 150 years since Don Quixote was adapted for ballet by Marius Petipa, this pas de deux from the final scene is one of the most celebrated works in dance. Both the ballerina and her partner playfully compete with each other in their soaring jumps, bravura pirouettes, and statuesque balances. The audience is set for a visual treat, which is both lovely and technically demanding.

Swan Lake Pas de Trois

Choreography: after Marius Petipa | Music: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Perhaps the most iconic and well-known ballet, Swan Lake is a masterpiece of classical dance. Equally iconic is Tchaikovsky’s truly epic and moving score. The pas de trois features gorgeous costumes, emotional theatricality, and some of the most challenging and powerful dance in ballet’s history.

Becoming Chimera

Choreography: Trevor Naumann |Original Music Composition: Boaz Roberts, performed by Kyle Adam Blair
Ballet West Demi Soloist Trevor Naumann’s approach to choreography has been called “cerebral storytelling.” His modern ballet stylings are often cast on dancers using the discordant music of Boaz Roberts as the guiding influence. The DeJoria Center will be a World Premiere for Naumann’s sixth work.

Ballet West II sold-out every location of their most recent tour, and with just one performance in Kamas at DeJoria Center, don’t miss your chance to see the future of ballet. Tickets are now available starting at just $10, at www.dejoriacenter.com or www.smithstix.com.
